6TH ATHENS BIENNALE - ANTI

The Athens Biennale launches its 6th edition under the title ANTI. At the heart of this year’s event is opposition, objection, rivalry, and contradiction, and how these words are experienced in Athens today; in a city that has endured a decade of economic, social and ethical crisis. How does Athens truly deal with the phenomena of normalization, of opposition and non-conformity, from politics to web culture, from videogames to Netflix, as well as its contemporary idols? The 5th Athens Biennale, under the title “Waiting for the Barbarians” was a fitting prelude to ANTI.

From October 26, more than 100 international artists will be exhibiting their provocative works, through which they will be commenting on today’s reality, at four different abandoned venues in the heart of the city of Athens. The emptiness of these abandoned buildings defines the feeling of discomfort and revolt in the city. ANTI’s main venues are the Telecommunications, Telegrams and Post building (Stadiou 5), the Benakeios Library (Anthimou Gazi 2), the former Esperia Palace Hotel (Stadiou 22) and the former TSMEDE building (Kolokotroni 4).

The Athens Biennale was founded in 2005 by contemporary art curator Xenia Kalpaktsoglou, journalist Augustine Zenakos, and visual artist Poka-Yio. This year they chose abandoned buildings in the city center as the setting of the Biennale, in order to fully capture Athens’ political, social and cultural momentum.
