ORESTEIA BY AESCHYLUS - VRACHON THEATER MELINA MERKOURI

Oresteia, the only extant ancient dramatic trilogy, will be presented in 2 performances at Theatro Vrachon Melina Merkouri on September 20 and 21, 2019: Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and Eumenides.

An innovative and bold concept from the National Theater of Greece, the three tragedies, are directed by three female directors - Io Voulgaraki, Lilly Meleme, and Georgia Mavragani - who staged their work for the first time at the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus, achieving great success.

Agamemnon, the first part of the timeless masterpiece and the starting point of a unique theatrical experience, will be presented on September 20. King Agamemnon returns from the Trojan war, only for his wife, Clytemnestra, to murder him in his own home. A remarkable cast, including Argyris Xafis, Despina Kourti, Evi Saoulidou, Alexandros Logothetis, Stelios Iakovidis, and Dimitris Georgiadis, is accompanied by the chorus which is the true protagonist and an integral part of the whole performance.

The second part of Oresteia, The Libation Bearers, will be presented on September 21 and takes place ten years after the end of Agamemnon. Orestes seeks vengeance for his father’s murder and wants to punish Clytemnestra and Aegisthus, the illicit lovers who seized power from the legitimate king. Violence begets violence but it’s the only way for justice to be restored. The lead roles will be portrayed by Filareti Komninou and Giorgos Chrysostomou.

On the same night, Eumenides, the final part of the trilogy will be presented. The enraged Furies follow Orestes who, spurred on by the ghost of Clytemnestra, anxiously seeks refuge and absolution by the goddess Athena who stands by him and declares him innocent. The trilogy ends with the restoration of balance amidst an atmosphere of reconciliation.
